Waiting for the bus, after work, a manhole began talking.
He looked around. A cucumber on a parking meter. A young black girl weighing it up.
He watched her reach out, hesitate then walk away.
The manhole cover moved.
As it lifted so did the voices.
He heard the word meat mentioned.
The cover lowered.
He lit three cigarettes and waited for the next mystery.
